Snow Shoe Rails to Trails: A Versatile Trail for All
The Snow Shoe Rails to Trails system is a remarkable 40-mile network of approved trails and roadways. What sets this trail apart is its inclusivity, welcoming walkers, bikers, equestrians, ATV riders, and snowmobilers. However, it’s essential to note that the SSRTA strictly enforces a “No Dirt Bikes” policy. Dirt bikes lack the necessary registration and insurance required by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), making them ineligible for trail access.
For those eager to explore the trail, registration with the club is a prerequisite. This involves providing proof of state registration and insurance for your motorized units. The process typically takes 2-3 weeks, but local corporate sponsors can expedite your membership sticker application.
The SSRTA is equipped with 13 gates featuring 70-inch wide bollards, ensuring convenience and safety for trail users.

Snow Shoe Rails to Trails Surface Details
The SSRT trail primarily consists of original rough ballast, making it suitable for bicycles equipped to handle large limestone surfaces. This terrain stretches from the Black Bear Trailhead to the Gillentown Trailhead, covering approximately 15 miles. Beyond Gillentown, approximately 4 miles of smoother Driving Surface Aggregate awaits hikers, bikers, and horseback riders.
Connecting to Bloody Skillet ATV Area
One of the exciting developments in recent years is the connection between the Snow Shoe Rails to Trails and the Bloody Skillet ATV riding area in Centre County. A 6 1/2 mile connector trail links these two attractions, providing an extended outdoor experience for ATV enthusiasts.
The Bloody Skillet ATV riding area boasts 37 trail miles in Phase 1 and 2. Located approximately 18 1/2 miles north of Snow Shoe, access to this area involves turning onto DeHaas Road from SR 144, then traveling 5 miles south to the Northern Terminus Trailhead. Registered Class II ATV’s under 58″ in width and weighing less than 1,200 pounds are permitted on these trails.
Bloody Skillet operates during both the summer and winter seasons. The summer season begins on the Friday before Memorial Day and ends on the last full weekend in September. The winter season extends from the day following the last day of the regular or extended antlerless deer season through April 1. Some trails may remain closed until after the late muzzleloader season, so it’s advisable to check with the forest district for specific opening dates.
Snow Shoe Rails to Trails Trailhead Directions
For those interested in accessing the SSRT trail, two trailheads are available:
- Gillentown Trailhead: From Interstate 80 at Snow Shoe, head north on Route 144 for approximately 1-1/2 miles to a 4-way stop. Continue straight on north 144 for another 2 miles, passing Seprish Recycling. Turn left at the Gillentown Trailhead sign, and follow the road approximately 300 yards to find ample parking adjacent to the trail.
- Black Bear Trailhead: From Interstate 80, take the Kylertown Exit, then head north onto Route 53. After about 1/3 mile, turn right onto Main Street, which is the first road past the eastbound Interstate 80 exit. Continue on Main Street, passing landmarks like the fire hall and Jackson’s Bar. After approximately 3.7 miles, you’ll arrive at the Black Bear Trailhead, located on the right side. Please note that camping overnight is not allowed at the Black Bear Trailhead.
