For over half a century, Bedford’s Fall Foliage Festival has stood as a beloved autumn tradition, drawing both enthusiastic visitors and steadfast locals to its vibrant celebration. The festival’s roots trace back to the visionary efforts of a dedicated group of six individuals: Doc and Angie Gordon, Kal Hine, Don Hershberger, Edd Flynn, and Wendy Cox. Their planning sessions took place in the charming setting of Fort Bedford Inn, where the festival’s inception began.

The festival’s inaugural highlights featured the gracious presence of Miss Pennsylvania and a captivating antique car parade. Local communities rallied together, with churches, 4-H groups, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and skilled craftsmen all contributing their talents and wares to the event.

Miss Pennsylvania, accompanied by Dorothy Studebaker, wife of Mayor E.G. Studebaker, presided over the festival’s first luncheon at the Hoffman Hotel. Under Dorothy’s stewardship, the festival flourished, eventually passing the baton to Janie Barnhart and Irma Garlock.

Over the years, the festival blossomed to encompass a wagon train, covered bridge tours, square dancing, and an elegant Harvest Ball. The town square bustled with bake sales, book stalls, and the irresistible aroma of homemade apple cider and apple butter. Shopping opportunities were endless, featuring quilts, a Craft and Christmas Fair, as well as stores brimming with art, antiques, and jewelry.

Honoring its rich traditions, the festival endures today, meticulously organized by a dedicated committee of local volunteers. With more than 400 exhibitors lining the streets every October, the antique car parade still captivates hearts, and the town’s storefronts continue to dazzle with autumnal splendor.

Bedford’s Fall Foliage Festival remains an enduring testament to the community’s enduring spirit and commitment to preserving its rich heritage.
